... UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES will prevent Mebanesville from performing Saturday ... BUT ... THE SHOW GOES ON with Michael "Sully' Sullivan & Red Kalyna celebrating the best in a pastasciutta food drive & Mebane's first benefit supporting Ukrainian Relief ... no cover charge, as folks are invited to bring a food donation for Allied Churches of Alamance County or a cash donation for relief effort ... the musicians are donating their earnings for the evening to the relief efforts ... follow the discussion section for more information! More About the Original "Pastasciutta Antifascista:" The 4th celebration of "Pastasciutta" in Mebane since 2018, the evening of music, story, and community engagement commemorates the 79th anniversary of the now-annual Italian folk celebration, Pastasciutta Antifascista, which first spontaneously broke out across Italy on July 25, 1943, when King Victor Emanuel III and Marshall Pietro Badoglio removed Premier Benito Mussolini from office, marking the official end of National Fascist Party rule in Italy and a turning point for the Allies and local resistance fighters across Western and Central Europe in World War II. Pastasciutta, literally, "dried pasta,” is the type of long-term, stored pasta, in variously creative shapes, that is boiled in water and eaten with a sauce, or other topping, rather than the smaller sorts of fresh-made pasta that more often go into soups. However, pasta—dried or cooked--is by no means required on Saturday August 6 at Trackside in Mebane (tho' cooked pasta will be available for sharing). Simply bring a friend and perhaps a contribution to the local food pantry or Ukrainian relief, as the popular Center Street bistro, and their musical partners of Mebanesville, celebrate the best of community and music in downtown Mebane. An historic version of the “covered dish resistance” celebration comes from the town of Campegine in the province of Reggio Emilia in north-central Italy. There, when news of Mussolini’s fall reached the community, the Cervi family, together with other families in the area, organized a large, spontaneous party, open to all, based on pasta. The pasta arrived to the town square in large milk cans, served with large quantities of butter and cheese, and with a clear political message, as the white culinary toppings contrasted with the politicized black of the shirts of local fascist militias, and the heavy use of dairy products flaunted the dietary prohibitions that the fascist regime had imposed on war-time Italian households. In reality, lasting joy for the end of the war and the Mussolini dictatorship eluded the Italian people, because the final liberation took place almost two years later, at the cost of many hundreds of thousands more casualties. But oppressed, beleaguered people will stop at nothing if offered hope, fellowship, and a decent meal. Indeed, that July 25--the day of Mussolini's official, political downfall--was a moment of joy, seized by millions of Italians, through a spontaneous display of celebratory community meals and other gatherings in local town squares and neighborhoods throughout the peninsula. The appreciation of this historic, fundamental display of community efforts toward liberation and self-determination has spread from the Italian peninsula and throughout the Italian diaspora to all corners of the globe-- an opportunity for people everywhere to unite in working toward a better life for all.

Red Kalyna Performs in a Caswell County Benefit for Ukrainian Relief & the Caswell County Parish

Red Kalyna Performs in a Caswell County Benefit for Ukrainian Relief & the Caswell County Parish

Saturday, June 4, 2022

10:00 PM - 12:00 AM

Red Kalyna will perform in a benefit concert for relief funds for Ukraine AND in support of the Caswell County Parish at 7:00 p.m. at Prospect United Methodist Church, 1900 US-158, Yanceyville, NC. All funds raised will be evenly divided between these two worthy charities. A $5 hot dog supper at 6 pm will precede the concert at 7:00 pm. Weather permitting, all events will take place on the church's lawn. Red Kalyna is a new musical ensemble, forged in the harsh realities of the February 24, 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, performing a range of traditional, pop, and bel canto Ukrainian music. Red Kalyna is the musical creation of two US-Ukrainian and two US-Italian co-nationals, now residing in Caswell and Alamance Counties North Carolina. Galyna Karpenski, Yanceyville, and Iryna Tkachenko, Haw River, are originally from Ukraine; Peggy Boswell & Loreins Vellani, Mebane, reclaimed Italian citizenship more than a decade ago through Loreins’ family. The players bring their repertoire alive through the use of accordion, guitar, mandolin, melodica, pennywhistle, and voice. The members perform under the name of Red Kalyna, a species of berry-producing tree (Vibronum opulus) native throughout North Africa and Europe, and a foundational element of Ukrainian national identify and culture. Galyna & Iryna’s love of Ukrainian music & culture is authentic & obvious; as citizens of a founding European Union (EU) member nation, Peggy & Loreins realize that war in any nation bordering the EU is of critical concern to all people in Europe, as well as peace on the planet. Joining these four musicians is Yanceyville’s Michael Sullivan. Iryna, Loreins & Peggy are also active members of the regionally-renowned, Alamance County-based ensemble Mebanesville. Galyna is a co-founder of the Caswell County-based canine rescue Fine Whines & Lickers. Michael is an active volunteer with the Yanceyville canine rescue.
